Bellingham Is A “Most Secure Place to Live”

Do eagles represent security? It's all I could think of to illustrate this post- I took this photo at Marine Park in Bellingham last summer.

Farmers Insurance just released its annual ‘Most Secure U.S. Places to Live’ rankings and guess what?  That’s right, Bellingham is on it! Bellingham ranked third in mid-size cities (150,000-500,00 residents).

Factors taken into consideration include: crime statistics, extreme weather, risk of natural disasters, housing depreciation, foreclosures, air quality, terrorist threats, environmental hazards, life expectancy and job loss numbers in 379 U.S. municipalities. The study broke it down into three categories: large metropolitan areas, mid-size cities and small towns.

(A tangent:  Bellingham does not have over 150,000 residents.  The 2009 population estimate for Bellingham by the US Census Bureau was 75,150.  Perhaps Farmers is including all of Whatcom County?  The  2009 population estimate for Whatcom County was 200,434.)

Lately there have been a few incidents in Bellingham that made it seem a little less secure, but overall I do feel pretty secure here.  And I know that insurance companies crunch the numbers like no one’s business, so I tend to believe them.  So whenever we hear something bad in the news, we can take solace in the fact that Bellingham is one of the most secure places to live.

In addition to Bellingham, the following Washington state cities made the ‘Most Secure’ list:

  • Olympia, WA (#1 mid-size city)
  • Clarkston, WA-Lewiston, Idaho (#1 small town)
  • Bellingham, WA (#3 mid-size city)
  • Wenatchee, WA (#6 small town)
  • Seattle-Bellevue-Everett, WA (#10 large metro area)
  • Yakima, WA (#13 mid-size city)
  • Spokane, WA (#15 mid-size city)
  • Bremerton–Silverdale, WA (#16 mid-size city)
  • Mt. Vernon-Anacortes, WA (#17 small town)

What do you think?  Do you feel secure in Bellingham?  Is there something you think that Farmers should/should not have included in their criteria?  How do you feel about the other Washington cities on the list?

  1. I’ve lived in both Seattle and Bellingham and have always felt secure in both locations. In my late teens/early 20’s I lived in Kansas City, and did not experience the same sense of security. I could not walk down the street at midnight and expect to be okay.

I’ve also lived in Minnesota – close to St. Cloud which made #11 in mid-size cities. That was also a lovely area, but the extreme weather was a bit too much. Tornado warnings in the summer, blizzards in the winter. Bellingham, by far, has been my favorite places to live factoring in Farmer’s criteria.

    • I lived in New Orleans for 5 years and although I love the city, lack of security is a big part of why I left. I used to drive three blocks at night to avoid walking, and I lived in a ‘good’ neighborhood!

  2. […] Bellingham is A “Most Secure Place to Live”- Just last week, Farmers Insurance released data that indicated that Bellingham was the third most secure mid-sized city in the country.  (Olympia came in first.) […]
