Dine Out for Maple Alley Inn

Do you know about Bellingham’s annual event ‘Dine Out for Maple Alley Inn‘?  It’s a yearly fundraiser for the Opportunity Council’s program that provides hot, nutritious meals for people in need.  The date changes every year but I think it is usually the first Tuesday in May.

50+ Bellingham restaurants will be donating 20% of their May 3rd sales to the Maple Alley Inn program.  You can see the full list of restaurants at the link above.  Last year Dine Out raise $20,000 for Maple Alley Inn and provided nearly half of the funds raised for Maple Alley Inn for the whole year.

So grab a bite to eat and do your good deed for the day!

What to do in Bellingham for Mardi Gras

Bellingham mardi gras

I took this picture in New Orleans, but wouldn’t it be cool if Bellingham had Mardi Gras floats this elaborate?

Happy Mardi Gras Bellingham!  How are you planning to celebrate Fat Tuesday?  While Bellingham and Mardi Gras are not exactly synonymous, local businesses are happy to give you some ways to have a good time.

Here are some ideas:

Take a cooking class- maybe an unusual idea, but it could help you host a killer Mardi Gras Party.  Held at the Cordata Food Co-Op, but organized by Whatcom Community College, Chef Jesse Otero pays tribute to the vibrant flavors of New Orleans as he prepares for your sampling enjoyment–grilled oysters with bacon remoulade, gumbo z’herbes, and caramelized banana and praline custard.  February 26, 2014 from 6-8:30.  $39 and you must register with WCC.

Last year (2013) Allied Arts hosted a parade!  Maybe they will do it again?

The Wild Buffalo usually has some fun shindig going on for Mardi Gras.

Boundary Bay Brewery celebrates every holiday in style, and Mardi Gras is no exception.

As Bellingham’s only cajun/creole restaurant, Bayou on Bay will be representing Mardi Gras with beads and merriment.

Around this time of year, I really miss living in New Orleans.  Maybe I will head out and see how Bellingham celebrates Mardi Gras!

I took a blogging break

Taylor Street dock walkway

I blog for a few different reasons: to get the word out about community events, to promote myself as a Bellingham real estate broker, as a place to share photos, and just as a general outlet to the world.  First and foremost though, I do it as a hobby.  And like all hobbies, sometimes the blog gets a lot of attention and sometimes it does not.  The past few weeks were the ‘not’ weeks.  I hate to feel obligated to post, and sometimes I just want a little break- so I took one!

I think that I will pick it up more in the days to come.  As always, thanks for visiting!

Fairhaven Girls’ Night Out

Fairhaven Bellingham

Fairhaven makes a great place for a Girls Night Out!

Just in case you missed downtown Bellingham’s Ladies’ Night Out, you get a second chance with Fairhaven’s Girls’ Night Out.  Held at the beginning of summer every year, this is a chance to get out to Fairhaven for some good times with the ladies.  Stores, galleries, salons and restaurants throughout the Fairhaven neighborhood host specials and are open late.

Tickets, or ‘passports’ are sold (price subject to change, but in 2013 it was $15) and as you get your passport stamped, you will be eligible to win prizes.  There is also an auction, comedy act, and fashion show to cap off the night.  For more information, including where to buy passports, visit the Fairhaven Girls’ Night Out website.

This Friday (April 29, 2011) is the third annual Ladies’ Night out in downtown Bellingham.  So if you were looking for an excuse to go out with just the girls, this is it!  There will be specials at stores and restaurants all over downtown Bellingham from 5 to 8 pm.

After that, there will be an after-party at The American Museum of Radio and Electricity until midnight.  The Ladies’ Night Out afterparty will have dancing, a raffle, drink specials and a fashion show. It costs $15 and the first 300 ticket holders will get a goody bag with stuff from local businesses.

Bellingham Ladies’ Night Out benefits the Womencare Shelter, which is a support organization for women who are/have been in abusive relationships.

Dirty Dan Days in Fairhaven

Dirty Dan Days Fairhaven Ladies of the Evening Society

The Fairhaven Ladies of the Evening Society always makes an appearance at Fairhaven's Dirty Dan Days

It must be springtime in Bellingham, because all of a sudden there are so many weekend events!  An annual favorite is Dirty Dan Days in Fairhaven, a celebration honoring Fairhaven’s founder, Dirty Dan Harris.  It’s coming up this weekend, April 30th and May 1st, 2011.

Dirty Dan was a notorious rum runner and owner of much of Fairhaven in the 1800’s.  There is an uphill piano race is inspired by the legend of Dirty Dan repossessing his piano and rolling it into the bay when the buyer wouldn’t pay up.

There will be live music in the Fairhaven Village Green, as well as family-friendly games and contests.  There will be a salmon toss on Saturday and a chowder cookoff on Sunday.  Period dress is encouraged!

For more information, including a full schedule, take a look at the Fairhaven website.
